The World is Tough, but Beautiful Too! :)

Love you dee, Kothai! :))

    Slight correction! It is "gruham" for "place" or "vIDu". To be precise, getting into a new house is "gruhap pravEsam" -- not "grahap pravEsam". "graham" is planet as in navagraham. Most people get confused between the two words.

    ரவி "அண்ணாவை"க் கேட்டா எப்படி ராகவ்? இதை நீங்க பிரதிவாதி பயங்கரம் "அண்ணாவிடம்" தான் கேட்கணும்!
    அவர் தான் இந்த அபிமானங்களைப் பற்றிப் பேசுகிறார்! அபிமானம் பற்றிய பதிவின் வார்த்தைகள் ஆச்சார்ய விளக்கம்! அடியேன் விளக்கம் அல்ல!

    //ஞான யோகம், பக்தி யோகம், கர்ம யோகம் செய்து கொண்டிருப்பவர்கள் தம் முன்னோர் சொன்ன முறைப்படி அதிலிருந்து வழுவாமல் நடக்கிறார்கள்//

    "வழுவாமலா"? - நிச்சயமாத் தெரியுமா? மந்திர லோபம், யந்த்ர லோபம், க்ரியா லோபம், ஜல லோபம், அக்னி லோபம் - இதெல்லாம் என்ன? முன்னோர் உரைத்தபடி "வழுவாமல்" என்றால், லோபம் பற்றி சொல்லப்படுவது ஏன்?

    //கோபம் ஒருவரின் இயற்கை குணம்..//

    தவறில்லை! ஆனால் அந்தக் கோபம் தான் உபாயங்களின் மேல் அபிமானத்தைக் கூட்டுகிறது!
    அடையும் ஊரை விட, செல்லும் மார்க்கமே சிரேஷ்டம் என்ற அஞ்ஞானத்தை உண்டு பண்ணி, ஞான/கர்ம மார்க்கங்களையும் சேர்த்தே அழிக்கிறது இந்த உபாயாபிமானம் என்பதை PB சுவாமிகள் விளக்குகிறார்! இன்னும் சில வீர்யமான சொற்களை எல்லாம் வியாக்யானத்தில் போடுகிறார்! :)))

    //ஞானத்தினாலோ, பக்தியினாலோ மட்டும் ஒருவர் பக்குவமடைந்து விட முடியாதே..//

    அப்போ எதனால் ஒருவர் பக்குவம் அடைய முடியும்-ன்னு நினைக்கறீங்க?

    கர்ம யோகம் செய்பவன், அந்த கர்மாவின் மேலும் பிடிப்பற்று இருக்கணும்! கர்மன்யேவே அதிகாரஸ்தே! கர்ம யோகத்தின் மேல் அதிகாரம், உரிமை கொள்ளக் கூடாது!

    ஞானம், கர்மம், பக்தி எல்லாம் தனித்தனி இல்லை! ஒன்றுடன் ஒன்று இணைந்தவை!

    பக்தி செய்யணும்னு நினைப்பது ஞானம்!
    பக்தி செய்வது கர்மம்!

    "கர்ம" சிரத்தையா இருப்பது பக்தி! பணிந்து கிடக்கும் ஞானமே பக்தி! - இப்படி இம்மூன்றும் வெவ்வேறானவை அல்ல! ஒன்றுடன் ஒன்று பின்னிப் பிணைபவை!

    I took Thamizh in high school and College and hence my Sanskrit knowledge is next to nothing. But listening to Dikshitar kritis made me look up some Sanskrit words occasionally,. More than that it is hunch many times when I get it right, if at all. When in doubt I refer to a Sanskrit dictionary. Of course, that online dictionary does not always have the word I look up.

    As for graham vs gruham, each word has so many meanings (as many as 5 for 'gruha" and as many as 16 for "graha"). The suffix letter "m" that we use in Thamizh is not used in Sanskrit in these two words.
    To answer your question on "anugraham" or "anugruham" I go with "anugraham" (அனுக்ரஹம்) because one of the meanings I find for "graha" is "favor or patronage". So if you say "I seek your anugraham" it is the blessing, favor etc.
    Accordingly I looked up "anugraha"(அனுக்ரஹ) in the dictionary (by Vaman Shivram Apte) and it says "favor, kindness, obligation" as the meaning. So it is
    அனுக்ரஹம்

    In view of the distinction between gruha and graha, the above explanation needs to be modified too.
    The dictionary meanings for "nigraha" (noun) are:
    1, Restraint 2. Suppression 3. confinement 4. defeat/overthrow 5. destruction 6.punishment (opposite of "anugraha"), 7. rebuke/reprimand 8. dislike/disgust

    Since we ruled out "house/place" for the word "graha" and one of the meanings for graha was favor/patronage/blessing, nigraha takes on the meaning of "punishment" in the extreme case and "restraint" in the moderate case. In my view nigraha takes on a complexion somewhere between "keeping in check" and "destruction". If it is a misdemeanor it will be kept in check. If it is a colossal crime it will be punished (by whatever means necessary).
    I will not get into philosophical overtones such as "even if you committed a heinous crime if you utter the name of nArAyaNa you will be absolved of such crime". I don't buy that. The aphorism "Every saint had a (sinful) past and every sinner has a (glorious) future" is just an excuse. But that is my terminal statement and I politely decline to get into arguments with believers lest I should offend them.

    2. KUrma: No kill; if you want to say it is to contain the mantara malai , OK. No big deal there.

    6. ParasurAma: Boy, wasn't he vengeful to massacre so many kings?
    7.RAma: Forget the causative phenomenon. rAvaNa was killed. Period.

    Well, this is all mythology--not sacrosanct religion. But what is religion anyway? It is just a way of life with codes and restraints devised and modified by the religious leaders eons ago. Even then let us assume this ajAmiLan uttered the name of nArAyaNa without intending to do so as a result of karma. Isn't that an escape hatch? Karma is the all-inclusive refuge to explain everything that we can think of. Even Krishna talks about karma and that what you receive and what you do are the results of karma. If that be the case why bother to seek divine intervention to try to change the course. The gods will only direct but not change the result of karma. You can't devise any mid-course correction to forestall the effect of previous karma. Kovalan (silappadhikaram) got murdered unjustly because he was instrumental in causing an unjust murder in his previous life--we are told. Even Buddhism relegates the actions to karma.

    You CANNOT have all answers in one story. It is a collective effort. You have to see it from the perspective of "remembering a nice thing".

    Itz not that everybody can sin all around and finally utter Narayana! As a matter of fact, you dont have control in the end, so as to order your tongue to say Narayana. It will be very tough. So the story emphazizes just that-tuning of mind.

    If mom asks you to buy candys for the remaining money, She knows it is for 50 paise. She gives you twenty rupees for shopping and her costs are 19.50.

    Now, you take the cue from this and cannot automatically buy candys, when she gives hundred rupees next time :)
    AjaamiLan's story is similar to that! Dont take your own cue and call it rationale :))

    Events are bound to happen and you are bound to act! Seeking the help of Divine is also an act!
    It cannot alleviate the weather or stop the rain. But you can get hold of an umbrella.

    That "cry" is what karma forces on you (reaction for your action). That "cry" is your punishment/atonement or whatever. That "cry" is what karma treats you and eventually karma itself dissolves in that "cry"!

    We said before that "garba graha" means grasping/seizing the womb. That is the egg is in the womb (garba) and the sperm grasps it resulting in the formation of the embryo which develops into the fetus. It is used colloquially to mean "fecundate". As I said before the word "garba" by itself would not mean fecundate.

    To refer to the sanctum sanctorum, we say "garba gruham" too wherein "garba" would take the meaning of "interior chamber" or a "hole". If the idol occupies the interior chamber of a structure then the "abode inside a hole or interior chamber" can be called "garba gruham"

    As for "garba gruham" it could also mean the womb if we take the meaning of fetus for 'garba". "gruham" would then mean the lodging (for the fetus)

  42. >>I said the "Purpose" of avatara is to contain & NOT kill! Underline "Purpose"!<<

    If this is the primary thesis then there is no argument at all. But one cannot deny there is killing. It does not matter what the purpose is. The Lord kills! The burgler who breaks into a home and kills the resident upon encountering him in the process of stealing money/goods, can say his purpose was to steal and not kill. The killing was incidental. But the resident was in his way so he has to kill! Right? That is the logic employed in justifying the purpose of the avatArams. How do you eradicate evil? Only by annihilating the person who is causing the evil.

    No, it just got reversed inadvertently.

    Does not matter. It is just a story. What if the message for peace was accepted. If Ravana agreed for peace, how would he have been "delivered" without the process of annihilation?

    Same thing with Krishna too. If Duryodhana agreed to give five villages to the Pandavas would the war have been avoided? There wouldn't have been the great "Mahabharatha". All these little episodes were fabricated to accentuate the decline of morality and the triumph of virtue. But all these were done in a cloud of lies, deceptions, and outright cheatings during the course of the war.

    I was not discarding the association of "oru magaLai uDaiyEn" with PeriyAzhwar's personal misery. I said he wrote that to describe the scene about the cowherd mother losing her daughter (in marriage). There was no obvious connection with PeriyAzhwar's personal life there. He did not link the two anyway. It is the interpreters who linked the verse with his personal life by implying he was subliminally saying it there. When somebody says something happens subliminally either you take it or reject it. I was questioning the connection without taking it as is or rejecting it outright.

    Yes, that is the problem as well as virtue of Hinduism. Problem because mythology is intertwined with religion and becomes unbelievable;Virtue because for the believers it gives some added punch. That is semantics again. It is all story-telling. If Sisupalan heeded the warning of Krishna and stopped calling him names at the 99th time, would Krishna have let him free without "chopping" his head. K had to do it. The narrators made it exciting by bringing that 100 times. It is just like we say "I am going to count to three and if you don't put it down...." We have already decided to do what we intended and the other party waits beyond the count of three deliberately to see what you'd do.

    The number of interpretations on "karma" is greater than the number of people in this world. I did not say karma implies retaliation in the absolute sense. "Karma has consequences". If retaliation is a consequence it is. Karma is more or less like criticism. "criticism" normally means evaluation for the good and bad aspects of anything. In reality it has only the negative connotation. Like that Karma is taken to mean 'bad karma" by default
